What is a pipe cross?

Stainless steel cross, referring to a water pipe joint made of stainless steel, is a type of pipe used for branching of pipes. It is used where the four pipes meet. The pipe cross can have one inlet and three outlets, or an inlet and an outlet. The diameter of the outlet and the inlet may be the same or different. That is to say, straight line crossing and reduced crossover are available.

The stainless steel cross has the equal diameter and the different diameter. The connecting ends of the equal-diameter cross are all the same size; the diameter of the cross main pipe is the same, and the pipe diameter of the branch pipe is smaller than the pipe diameter of the main pipe. A stainless steel cross is a type of pipe used at the branch of a pipe. For the manufacture of a cross seamless pipe, the processes currently used are hydraulic bulging and hot forming. 

A. Hydraulic bulging

The hydraulic bulging of the cross is a forming process in which the branch pipe is expanded by the axial compensation of the metal material. The process is to use a special hydraulic machine to inject the liquid into the tube blank with the same diameter of the cross, and to press the tube blank synchronously by the two horizontal side cylinders of the hydraulic machine, and the volume of the tube blank becomes smaller after being squeezed, and the tube blank is filled. The liquid becomes smaller as the volume of the tube blank becomes smaller, and when the pressure required for the expansion of the cross branch pipe is reached, the metal material flows along the cavity of the mold to expand the branch pipe under the double action of the liquid pressure in the side cylinder and the tube blank. The cross hydraulic bulging process can be formed at one time, and the production efficiency is high; the main pipe and shoulder wall thickness of the cross are increased. Due to the large tonnage of equipment required for the seamless bulging hydraulic bulging process, it is currently mainly used for the manufacture of standard wall thickness cross DN400. The suitable forming materials are low carbon steel, low alloy steel and stainless steel with relatively low cold work hardening tendency, including some nonferrous metal materials such as copper, aluminum and titanium.

B. Hot press forming

Hot press forming of cross is to divide the tube blank larger than the diameter of the cross diameter into a size of cross diameter, and open a hole in the portion of the tension branch pipe; the tube blank is heated and placed in the forming die And inserting a die of the tensile branch pipe in the tube blank; under the action of the pressure, the tube blank is radially compressed, and in the process of radial compression, the metal flows toward the branch pipe and forms a branch pipe under the drawing of the die. The entire process is formed by the radial compression of the tube blank and the stretching process of the branch portion. Different from the hydraulic bulging cross, the metal of the hot-pressed cross branch pipe is compensated by the radial movement of the tube blank, so it is also called the radial compensation process. Due to the use of heated post-pressing tees, the tonnage of equipment required for material forming is reduced. The hot-pressed cross has wide adaptability to materials, and is suitable for materials of low-carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel; especially the cross large-diameter and thick-walled pipe, which is usually used.

Equal cross

The equal cross is one kind of the pipe cross, just like a equal tee, the equal cross means all the 4 ends of the cross are in same diameter.

Threaded cross
Threaded cross is one type of industrial pipe fittings whose main function is to split the passing medium. The threaded four-way is divided into two types: forging and casting. The forging refers to the method of heating the forging by steel ingot or round bar, and then forming the thread on the upper lathe. The casting refers to melting the ingot and pouring it into the four-way. After the model, it is cooled.
Because of the different manufacturing processes, the pressure is also different, and the withstand pressure is much higher than that of casting.
The main manufacturing standards for socket weld crosses are generally GB/T14383, ASME B16.11, BS 3799.
